XV. Select rows

On a worksheet, you can select an entire row, adjacent rows, and nonadjacent rows by using keyboard shortcuts or by using mouse. For using keyboard shortcut keys and using mouse to select what we mentioned will describe as the following:

To select an entire row, you just place cell pointer to the cell next to the row heading, hold down Shift key with Ctrl key and then press Right Arrow (Shift + Ctrl + Right Arrow). Or hold down Shift key and then press Space Bar (Shift + Space Bar); in this case, you can place cell pointer to any cell on a row you intend to select.

Note: If the row contains data, pressing Ctrl +Shift +Right Arrow selects the row to the last used cell. Pressing Ctrl +Shift +Right Arrow again selects the entire row. The figure of the last used cell of a row is shown below:

To select adjacent rows, you need to select the first row by following the selection of an entire row above, then hold down Shift key, and then press Up Arrow or Down Arrow key to add to the selection. For example, you selected the second row in a worksheet and want to extend the selection to the fifth row. To do this task, you need to use Down Arrow key. After you selected the the second row, hold down Shift key, and then press Down Arrow till the fifth row.

For another example, you selected the third row and want to extend the selection to the first row. To do this task, you need to use Up Arrow key. After you selected the third row, hold down Shift key, and then press Up Arrow up to the first row or hold down Shift with Ctrl, and then press Up Arrow (Shift + Ctrl+ Up Arrow) after selecting the third row.

To select nonadjacent rows, select the first row by following the selection of an entire row, then press Shift + F8 to add to selection, and then press Up Arrow or Down Arrow to move cell pointer to other rows you want to extend the selection. For example, you want to select only the first, third, and fifth rows in a worksheet. To do this task, follow the procedure below:

1. Select the first row by placing cell pointer to any cell on the first row, then hold down Shift, and then press Space Bar (Shift +Space Bar) .

2. Press Shift +F8, Excel displays Add to Selection on the status.

3. Press Down Arrow to move cell pointer to any cell on the third row.

4. Select the third row by following step one.

5. Press Shift +F8 twice

6. Press Down Arrow to move cell pointer to any cell on the fifth row.

7. Select the fifth row.

or

1. Select the first row by placing cell pointer to the first cell of the first row, hold down Shift with Ctrl and then press Right Arrow (Shift +Ctrl +Right Arrow).

2. Press Shift +F8, Excel displays Add to Selection on the status.

3. Press Down Arrow to move cell pointer to the first cell of the third row.

4. Select the third row by following step one.

5. Press Shift +F8

6. Press Down Arrow to move cell pointer to the first cell of the fifth row.

7. Select the fifth row.

XV.2. Mouse

It is very easy by using mouse to select an entire row; you just click the  row heading.

To select adjacent rows, drag across the row headings or select the first row heading, and then hold down Shift while you click the last row heading.

You sometimes want to select nonadjacent rows. To do this, click the first row heading of your selection, and then hold down Ctrl while you click other row headings to add to the selection.
