XVII. Insert cells on a worksheet

On a worksheet, you can insert a blank cell or blank cells above or to the left of the active cell. When you add a blank cell or blank cells, you can shift the cells right or down. If you want to add the new cell or the range of cells above the active cell, click Shift cells down in the Insert dialog box. Click Shift cells right when you intend to add the new cell or the range of cells to the left of the active cell.

For example, you intend to add a new blank cell to the left of the cells:45, 50, 60, 90. See the figure:

To do this task, follow the procedure below:

1. Select cell 45 by clicking cell 45

2. Right-click the selected cell

3. Click Insert on the shortcut menu.

Excel displays the Insert dialog box as the figure:

4. Click Shift cells right

5. Click Ok

or

1. Select the cell 45

2. On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click the drop-down arrow next to Insert, click Insert cells. Or you can also use the shortcut key to add the cell by holding down Ctrl with Shift , and then press equal sign (=).

Excel displays the Insert dialog box  that you already saw above.

3. Click Shift cells right

4. Click Ok

Excel adds a new cell to the worksheet immediately. See the figure:

For another example, you want to insert four cells above the second row of the worksheet below:

To do this task, do one the following:

1. Select four cells of the second row

2. Right-click the selected cells

3. Click Insert on the shortcut menu.

4. Click Shift cells down

5. Click Ok

or

1. Select the four cells of the second row

2. On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click the drop-down arrow next to Insert, click Insert cells. Or you can also use the shortcut key to add the cells by holding down Ctrl with Shift, and then press equal sign (=).

3. Click Shift cells down

4. Click Ok

Excel adds new four cells to the worksheet immediately.

You can repeat the action of inserting a cell quickly by selecting the location where you want to insert the cell, and then press Ctrl +Y.
