On a worksheet, you can change the column width to fit the contents in a cell, set a column to a specific width, match the column width to another column, and so on. The values of column width that you set representing the average number of characters of the standard font that can be display on a cell.

XXI.1. Set a specific column width

You can set a specific width to a column or columns by doing the following:

- Select the column or columns that you want to resize.

- On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click drop-down arrow next to Format, under Cell Size, click Column Width.

- Type the value of the column width that you want in the box.

- Click Ok

XXI.2. Change the column width to fit the contents

When your contents in a cell is longer than the column width, they display in multiple cells that look not nice and some contents are hidden. So you need to change the column width to fit the contents by doing the following steps:

- Select the column or columns that you want to change.

- On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click drop-down arrow next to Format, under Cell Size, click AutoFit Column Width.

XXI.3. Match the column width to another column

Sometimes, you want the width of one column equal to the width of another column; you can do it by doing the following:

 - Select a cell in the column.

- On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click Copy.

- Click the destination cell of the column

- On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click drop-down arrow under Paste, and the click Paste Special.

- Click Column Widths, and then click Ok.

You can also use shortcut key by doing the following steps:

- Press Ctrl +C after selecting the cell in the column.

- Click the target cell of the column, and then press Ctrl +V.

- Click drop-down arrow of the Paste Options, and then click Keep Source Column Widths.

XXI.4. Change the default column width for all columns a worksheet or workbook

You can specify a different number for the default column width to all columns on a worksheet or workbook as the following:

+ All columns on a worksheet

-  Click the sheet tab

- On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click drop-down arrow next to Format, under Cell Size, click Default Width.

- Type the value of column width that you want, and then click Ok.

+ All columns on a workbook

- Click-right any sheet tab

- Click Select All Sheets, and then follow the second step to the last step of changing the default column for all columns on a worksheet.

XXI.5. Change the column width by using the mouse

 You can change the column width by using the mouse; it may be faster than you use the tools of Format in the Cells group.

+ Change the column width of one column

- Place the mouse on the column heading that you want to resize, and then drag the boundary on the right side of the column heading till the width of column that you want.

+ Change the column width of multiple columns

- Select the columns that you want to change, place the mouse on any selected column heading, and then drag the boundary on the right side of it.

+ Change the column width to fit the contents

- Select the column or columns that you want to resize, place the mouse on the selected column heading, and then double-click the boundary on the right side of that selected column heading.

+ Change the column width for all columns on a worksheet

- Click Select All button, and then drag the boundary on the right side of any column heading.
