Microsoft Excel 2007 tutorial: add or remove a sheet background

Add or remove a sheet background

VI. Add or remove a sheet background

In Microsoft Office Word, you can use a color, gradient, texture, pattern, or picture as a sheet background, but in Microsoft Office Excel, you can use only a picture. You insert a sheet background to display purposes only. For example, you use a follower picture as a sheet background of the Follower List sheet. The sheet background is not printed, and it is not kept in an individual worksheet or in an item that you save as a web page.

Because the sheet background is not printed, you can not use it as a watermark. However, you can mimic a watermark by inserting a picture in a header or footer.

VI.1. Add a sheet background

- Select the worksheet that you want to insert a sheet background. Make sure you select only one worksheet.

- On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Background.

- In the Sheet Background dialog box, click the picture that you want to use as the sheet background.

- Click Insert button.

The sheet is filled with the selected picture by repeating it.

Notes:

- To improve readabilities, you can hide the gridline and apply a solid color to the cells that contain data. To hide the gridline, click the View tab, in the Show/Hide group, clear the Gridlines check box.

- When you save the worksheet, a sheet background also save at the same time.

For example, insert C plus plus picture as a sheet background to display that this worksheet contains a list of students that study C plus plus subject. To do this task, do the following:

1. Select the worksheet that contains the names of students that study C plus plus subject. Make certain that only one worksheet is selected.

2. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Background.

3. In the Sheet Background dialog box, click the C plus plus picture. If this picture is not available in your computer, create it.

You may be difficult to read the contents in list above, so you should hide the gridline and fill the cells that contain data with a solid color.

VI.2. Remove a sheet background

If you no longer need a sheet background, you can delete it. To remove the sheet background, do the following:

- Select the worksheet that you want to take off the sheet background. Make certain that only one worksheet is selected.

- On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Delete Background.

VI.3. Mimic a watermark in Excel

Excel does not provide the watermark functionality. If you want to display a picture on every printed page (for example, to prevent the information from copying.), you can add the picture in a header or footer. The added picture appears behind the text, on the top or bottom of every page; you can also format the picture to change the brightness, contrast, or size. To insert the picture in the header or footer, do the following:

- Select the worksheet that you want to add a watermark. Make sure you select only one worksheet.

- On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Header & Footer.
