Link table

XIV. Link Table

Link table is a process of connecting a table or tables in the current database to the other database files include Access database, ODBC database, and other file formats such as Excel, Text File, XML File, HTML Document and so forth. In this section, we introduce you how to link a table from Access database, and excel file.

Example1: You want to link TblBook from SaleAndStock database to Database1 database. To do so, follow the steps below:

- Open Database1 database and follow the steps of importing Access table till the dialog box below appears.

- Click Browse button to look for a location of the SaleAndStock database that you stored

- Click Link to the data source by creating a linked table

- Click Ok

A Link Tables dialog box appears:

- Click TblBook and then click Ok

Note:  In link table from Access file, you can link many tables at a time.

Example2: You want to link TblBook sheet from Book1 to Database1 database. To do so, follow the steps below:

If you are in Database1 database

- Click External Data tab and follow the steps of importing worksheet from spreadsheet file till this dialog box appears.

- Click Browse button to look for the location of Book1

- Click Ok

A Link Spreadsheet Wizard dialog box appears:

This dialog box asks you to choose which worksheet or range you want to link because the Book1 excel file contains more than one worksheet or range.

Show Worksheets: This option show all worksheet in excel file.

Show Named Ranges: Shows only name of the range that you give to the worksheet.

- Select TblBook

- Click Next

- Tick First Row Contains Column Headers to set the first row as column header

- Click Next

- Type a name for a linked table in the text box as the figure below:

Note: A linked table does not allow you to change the data. If you want to edit, delete  or add more data to the table, do it in spreadsheet file.
